Patagonia Provisions, the food division of Patagonia, has announced that nine of its employees will be let go in a company restructuring.
Over the past three years, Patagonia Provisions has experienced substantial revenue and gross profit growth, as well as earning multiple product awards. Its responsibly sourced seafood and foods made from regenerative organic grains are some of the industry’s highest quality.
That being said, its overhead is out of proportion to its size and changes needed to be made in order to achieve long-term scale, profitable growth and maximum impact, the company told Organic Insider.
“The decision to say goodbye to nine of our colleagues is painful and difficult. We will miss them and appreciate all the hard work and creativity they have poured into our business,” said Paul Lightfoot, general manager of Patagonia Provisions. “I am deeply committed to doing what we can for them during this transition period. This includes a minimum of 13 weeks of pay, one year of health insurance, a fiscal year 2025 bonus, and six months of career transition services.”
Although there will be a reduction in headcount, the operations and sales teams will not change at Patagonia Provisions, and the same holds true with creative and environmental impact standards.
As one of the three founding members of the Regenerative Organic Alliance, which oversees the Regenerative Organic Certified® label (ROC), the company’s commitment to this certification remains firm.
“We are not wavering one iota when it comes to ROC,” said Paul Lightfoot. “Though this is a difficult time for business, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the highest quality products and our values.”
With the organic industry facing tremendous economic uncertainty, largely due to tariffs, brands of all sizes are facing an extremely challenging operating environment, especially those that have global supply chains. As a result, it should not come as a surprise if many more organic companies make a similar move, as managing costs will only take on greater importance.
